Who we are and how to contact us

Codectionary is an independently operated service based in the United Kingdom. This notice explains how we use information when you browse documentation, create an account or use our learning tools.

Information you provide and account sign-in

Email registration uses your name, email address and password to create and authenticate an account. Password reset and account settings requests process the information you submit to complete those actions.

When you choose Google sign-in, a Google identity credential is sent to our account service to verify your identity. It can contain your Google account identifier, name, email address, email verification status and profile image. We do not receive your Google password or request Gmail or Google Drive access.

Your learning profile can include your user identifier, join date, quiz results, XP, level, streaks and mastered topics. Information you send when contacting us is used to respond and resolve your request.

Why we use information

We use account details, authentication information and learning results to provide the account and features you request (performance of our agreement with you). We use necessary security and support information to maintain a reliable service, prevent abuse and answer requests (our legitimate interests, balanced against your rights).

Where processing is required by law, we rely on that legal obligation. Optional analytics is enabled only after you choose to allow it (consent). You can withdraw that choice through Privacy choices below; this does not affect processing that occurred before withdrawal.

Cookies and browser storage

The account API uses a session cookie to maintain sign-in. Browser storage remembers preferences such as your theme, interface language, translation cache, editor settings and analytics choice. Clearing site data can remove those preferences and may sign you out.

Choosing Essential Only prevents optional Vercel Analytics events from being sent by the site. It does not disable information needed to sign in or a third-party service you choose to open, such as Google sign-in or a YouTube video.

Analytics and technical information

If you allow analytics, Vercel Web Analytics receives usage information such as pages visited, referring sites and browser or device information to help us understand how the site is used. Vercel describes this service as cookie-free analytics. We strip URL query strings and fragments from analytics events, and do not enable it on password-reset links.

Hosting and network providers necessarily process connection information, including IP addresses and request details, to deliver and protect the site. We do not currently operate a separate application server-log programme; providers may maintain their own operational or security logs.

Videos and Google services

Watch uses YouTube videos and remote thumbnails. Loading a thumbnail can send connection information to its image provider. Opening a video loads a YouTube privacy-enhanced embedded player, which can process device, connection and viewing information and use browser storage under Google’s policies. Privacy-enhanced mode does not mean that no data is processed.

Google sign-in is optional. Google processes information when its sign-in interface loads and when you authenticate. Google’s Privacy Policy and YouTube’s Terms of Service explain their own practices. Deleting your Codectionary account does not delete data that Google or YouTube holds independently.

AI, translation and the playground

When you send an AI question, the question and relevant documentation context go to our account API and its AI service provider to generate an answer. Avoid including sensitive or confidential information. AI-provider retention and processing details should be requested from us before submitting such information.

When you select an interface translation, visible page text is sent through our translation endpoint to Google Cloud Translation and translations are cached in your browser. A shared translation cache uses Upstash Redis to store translated text for up to 24 hours. Hashed request identifiers and short-lived usage counters help limit abuse and control translation usage. Do not use this feature to translate confidential material. Form inputs and code blocks are excluded from automatic page translation.

The playground runs supported code in your browser. Runtimes and fonts may be downloaded from external providers. Code you run can itself request external resources; those requests are governed by the code and the receiving service. Keep your own copies of files you wish to retain.

Sharing and international processing

Information is shared with services needed to provide the features described above, including our hosting and account infrastructure, Google authentication and translation, YouTube, our AI provider and, when allowed, Vercel Analytics. We may also disclose information where required by law or necessary to address a security incident or legal claim.

Providers may process information outside the UK. Applicable protections and transfer arrangements depend on the provider and service. Contact us for details of the arrangements relevant to your information.

Retention and account deletion

Account information is used while your account is active. You can request deletion from Settings by selecting Delete account, typing DELETE and confirming your identity with your current password or the Google account linked to your profile, or by contacting codectionary@outlook.com. The site signs you out after the account service confirms deletion.

We have not yet established a fixed retention schedule for backups or provider logs. We therefore cannot promise that every backup or provider record disappears immediately when an account is deleted. Contact us for the current position; we will explain any information that must be retained for security, legal obligations or claims.

Account deletion does not clear browser storage or delete your Google account. You can clear Codectionary site data in your browser and manage Google connections through your Google account settings.

Your rights and complaints

Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law gives you rights to access your personal information, correct it, request erasure, restrict processing, object to processing and receive a portable copy. You can also withdraw consent to optional analytics at any time.

Email codectionary@outlook.com to make a request. We may need information to verify your identity and will explain any legal limits that apply. You can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or to another relevant supervisory authority.
