<ruby>, <rt>, <rp>

Ruby annotations display small pronunciation or translation text above (or next to) East Asian characters, commonly used for showing furigana over Japanese kanji or pinyin over Chinese characters. The <ruby> element wraps the base text and its annotation, <rt> holds the annotation text itself, and <rp> provides fallback parentheses for browsers that do not support ruby rendering.

Best practices

  • Always include rp fallback parentheses so the pronunciation remains readable in browsers without ruby support
  • Use ruby specifically for pronunciation guides or short annotations above text, primarily for East Asian languages
  • Keep rt content short — it is meant to be a brief annotation, not a full translation
  • Test rendering across browsers, since ruby support and default styling can vary

<span>
