Form Autofill with autocomplete

autocomplete tokens describe the meaning of form values so browsers can offer appropriate autofill. Tokens such as name, email, and shipping postal-code identify data purpose more precisely than an input’s visual label. Autofill availability depends on browser settings and stored user data.

Syntax

<input name="email" type="email" autocomplete="email">

Examples

Form Autofill with autocomplete: working example

Save as an HTML file and open it in a browser. Expected result: Three labeled fields appear with semantic autofill hints; suggestions depend on the browser and saved data.

<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
<title>Working example</title>
</head>
<body>
<form>
  <p><label>Full name <input name="name" autocomplete="name"></label></p>
  <p><label>Email <input name="email" type="email" autocomplete="email"></label></p>
  <p><label>Delivery postcode <input name="postal" autocomplete="shipping postal-code"></label></p>
  <button type="button">Review details</button>
</form>
</body>
</html>
  1. Expected result: Three labeled fields appear with semantic autofill hints; suggestions depend on the browser and saved data.
  2. shipping qualifies the address token, distinguishing it from billing information.
  3. autocomplete complements labels and input types; it does not validate a value.

Best practices

  • Use standardized tokens instead of invented field-purpose strings.
  • Do not rely on autocomplete="off" to prevent password-manager behavior.

Browser compatibility

Support applies to the named feature, not every attribute or behaviour in this article. Versions refer to browsers, not operating systems.

Autofill availability also depends on settings and saved data. Individual autocomplete-token support is shown where BCD records it.
